2023 will be a big year for JRPG fans but particularly for Final Fantasy fans. A lot of Final Fantasy games are scheduled to be released in 2023 and except if there’s a cataclysm in the world (or a new pandemic), they shouldn’t be delayed. As Square Enix closed 2022 with a bang with Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion, it’s starting 2023 with a boom.

Here are all Final Fantasy games coming in 2023 in chronological order.

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 6.3 Gods Revel Lands Tremble – PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC – January 10, 2023

Although, it’s not a new expansion such as Heavensward or Endwalker per se, Patch 6.3 Gods Revel Lands Tremble for Final Fantasy XIV means that developers are not slowing down at all. Especially since it’s not only one of the most profitable games for Square Enix but also the 10-year anniversary for the new version on Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn.

This Patch 6.3 for Final Fantasy XIV will release on January 10, 2023 and will add new scenario stories as well as new side stories. Players will also be able to take on new challenges, roam into new dungeons as well as overcome new trials. Read the patch notes to know more.

Forspoken – PS5, PC – Luminous Productions – January 23rd, 2023

I know what you’re thinking. It’s not called Final Fantasy. There are no chocobos. No Cid. Well, if it looks like Final Fantasy, plays like Final Fantasy and sound like Final Fantasy, well then it’s a Final Fantasy. It comes from the same developers as well.

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 6.31 Gods Revel Lands Tremble – PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC – January 24, 2023

Patch 6.31 will add a new boss with Omega Protocol Ultimate Raid that players will be able to complete, battle and defeat starting January 24, 2023.

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origins Different Future DLC – PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC – January 27, 2023

Revealed in late December 2022, Different Future is the last DownLoadable Content for Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origins. Although we don’t know much about this last quest for Jack & Co., we can see from the trailer that the team meets a Moogle (sporting a design from Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT) who will guide them in their mission. Moreover, the Lufenians will be featured more prominently as antagonists, Prometheus will be present as a boss fight. Finally, Jack, the main character, will have access to a new job which main weapon is a big gun.

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line – Nintendo Switch, PS4 – February 16, 2023

Almost 10 years after the last console episode and a full 2 years after the last arcade version, Theatrhythm is coming back with Theatrhythm Final Bar Line on February 16, 2023. It will include a whopping 385 songs in the base game and a further 117 songs via a season pass.

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line will feature tracks from Square Enix’s extended properties such as the Last Order anime, the Nintendo DS Final Fantasy The 4 Heroes of Light spin-off as well as Final Fantasy VII Remake, Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origins, a bigger emphasis on Final Fantasy XIV and its arrangements albums.

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 6.35 – PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC – February 2023

New Tribal Quests are coming in 6.35, and this time around they’ll be dedicated to the Loporrits and focused on crafters.

A new dungeon named “Lapis Manalis” will be implemented. It’ll be a main quest dungeon. A new trial with its extreme version will also come, and it’s currently still a secret.

A new Unreal trial will be added, Containment Bay P1T6, which is the battle against Sophia. It’ll require a lot of attention as there will be many mechanics.

The new Alliance Raid will be Myths of the Realm part 2, named “Euphrosyne.” You can find interesting screenshots below featuring a familiar silhouette and strange machinery, on top of a mysterious tree in the sky.

The fifth Ultimate Dutyis a secret and will release two weeks after update 6.3, while the third Deep Dungeon will be included in update 6.35, titled “Eureka Orthos.” Below you can check out two screenshots.

It’ll require completion of Endwalker’s main quest and progress of floor 50 of Palace of the Dead. This is because the developers think of Palace of the Dead as a sort of tutorial for this kind of gameplay.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster – Nintendo Switch, PS4 – Spring 2023

The console version of Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is finally getting a release in 2023 during the spring still in time for the series 35-year celebrations. Square Enix showcased a beautiful collector’s edition just for this occasion. But don’t try to find it, it’s been sold it since its reveal last month.

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 6.4 – PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC – May 2023

As Square Enix previously revealed, new patches will come every 4 months instead of every 3.5 months. This means that Patch 6.4 should release somewhere in May 2023 while Patch 6.5 should release in September 2023. Not much is known about those patches just yet but they should be expanding the trust system, releasing 2 brand new Criterion Dungeons as well as revealing the conclusion of the Pendaemonium storyline.

Final Fantasy XVI – PS5 – Creative Business Unit 3 – June 22nd, 2023

Final Fantasy XVI is without a doubt Square Enix biggest release of the year. This new instalment is spearheaded by Final Fantasy XIV’s Naoki Yoshida and features a brand new world, a new combat system as well as an epic heroic-fantasy story. The summons, here called Eikons, are at the forefront of the narrative and will be playable for some never-before-seen duels.

Final Fantasy XVI will release exclusively on PS5 on June 22nd, 2023.

Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival North America – Sometime between the release of Patch 6.4 and Patch 6.5

For the first time in 5 years, North America will host a Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival. Although the exact date was not yet known, we now know that the acclaimed and upcoming event will take place between the release of Patch 6.4 and Patch 6.5, so between May 2023 and September 2023.

As expected, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival North America will be held on the 28th and 29th of July, 2023. The event will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada, just like the previous three in-person events. Our guess was July 2023 or August 2023 as June 2023 is already occupied by the release of Final Fantasy XVI helmed by the same producer as Final Fantasy XIV, Naoki Yoshida aka Yoshi-P.

Finally, we can logically expect to hear about Final Fantasy XIV’s next expansion. All the previous recent Final Fantasy XIV expansions–with the exception of Endwalker who was announced during unprecedented times and circumstances–were revealed during Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in North America: Heavensward was announced at the 2014 event; Stormblood at the 2016 one; and Shadowbringers at the 2018 Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in North America.

Ever Crisis Final Fantasy VII Closed Beta Test – iOS, Android – Summer 2023

Announced almost 2 years ago, Ever Crisis Final Fantasy VII is an episodic mobile game allowing players to relive the main events of the Final Fantasy VII compilation, including the ones from the original 1997 game but also the Japan-exclusive Before Crisis or even Crisis Core.

Square Enix didn’t say much about the game and a recent trailer showed that the SD graphics will just be for the exploration part of the gameplay. The combat will feature realistic graphics not unlike Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion.

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 6.5 – PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC – September 2023

Please see the Final Fantasy XIV Patch 6.4 above as not much else is known about this patch.

Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival Europe – October 21st and 22nd, 2023

Taking place in London, UK, the European portion of the 2023 Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival will be held on October 21st and 22nd, 2023.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth – PS5 – Winter 2023

Also known as Final Fantasy Remake part 2 for a while, Final Fantasy Rebirth was revealed during the Final Fantasy VII 25th Anniversary broadcast along with the yet unnamed third part. Yoshinori Kitase said that the game should be available during Winter 2023.

If we assume that Square Enix is using the same strategy as before, then Final Fantasy VII Rebirth should release in December 2023 just Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion was revealed with a Winter 2022 release window and finally got a December 13, 2022 release.

As for the story, once more, we don’t know much. The trailer didn’t spell anything out. We can just see Cloud and Sephiroth walking in the Nibelheim mountain range which means that it’s during Cloud’s past when the character tells his recollection to the other characters (Barret, Tifa, Aerith and Red XII) in Kalm. Zack should be alive somewhere as per Final Fantasy VII Rebirth announcement. Finally, and it couldn’t possibly be a coincidence, the term Rebirth in Japanese is spelled and pronounced the same way as Reverse. We need to keep this in mind when going into the game next winter.

Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival Japan – Early 2024

We include this Japanese edition of the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival as it is the conclusion of the event world tour.

Speculations around further new Final Fantasy announcements from Square Enix

Yoshinori Kitase recently said that players should expect big surprises and reveal this year. So let’s see where our wild mind could go.

2023 is a year full of anniversaries in the JRPG franchise but not only, Square Enix as company will celebrate 20 years since the merger of 2003 when Enix actually saved Square from bankruptcy (although it’s a little more complicated than that). So maybe we’ll see a JRPG/management game like SGGG on the Dreamcast. Why not?

Other less prominent games are celebrating as Game Boy Advance’s Final Fantasy Tactics Advance as well as PS2’s Final Fantasy X-2 and GameCube’s Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles will all turn 20 in 2023. Final Fantasy IV The After Years will turn 15 in 2023 along with the original Dissidia Final Fantasy for the PSP. Finally, PS3 and Xbox 360 Lighning Returns Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn will both turn 10 in 2023. So maybe we can expect some revelations on this front.

However, the most recent rumor is of the elusive Final Fantasy IX Remake. This project was present along with hundreds of others (more than 18,000 in total) in the huge Nvidia leak that occurred in 2021. This list already proved to be right on several occasions with games such as Chrono Cross Remastered (Chrono Cross The Radical Dreamers Edition), Tactics Ogre Remastered (Tactics Ogre Reborn), DioField Chronicle and Voice of Cards The Forsaken Maiden. So it’s not far fetched as to think Final Fantasy IX Remake could come or at least be announced sooner rather than later along with the Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster.
